Visiting Places from Summertime Rendering
A trip to Wakayama, Kada and Tomogashima to visit the real-life locations of Summertime Rendering
This post is mostly pictures without much text, because I want to get all planned posts done and explore new places. Let’s get started!
Wakayamashi Station
Wakayama City actually has two major train stations: Wakayamashi Station and Wakayama Station. Wakayamashi Station is the main station for the Nankai Electric Railway, while Wakayama Station is the main station for the JR Lines as well as Wakayama Dentetsu.
Wakayamashi Station is what I used to get to Wakayama City through Osaka and to get to Kada and Tomogashima.
Taking the train seen in the first picture, you can reach Kada and Tomogashima, the real life locations of Hitogashima in Summertime Render.
Tomogashima
The island Hitogashima in Summertime Rendering is actually Tomogashima in real life. However, it is an uninhabited island nowadays, and the small town seen in the anime is actually mostly based on Kada, a coastal town near Tomogashima. You can reach Tomogashima by taking a ferry for about 20 minutes from Kada Port to Tomogashima Nonoura Pier.

The ferry seats are not facing each other but otherwise the same. I sat on a seat inside the central room though.
When I was there, they were working on building a new pier to replace the old one.
Ushio is welcoming us to the island as Wakayama city tourism ambassador.
She was also at Wakayamashi Station, and I even found her at Namba Station in Osaka, which is how I got the idea to do this trip in the first place.
Kada
Located northwest of Wakayama City, Kada is a small town on the coast of the Kii Peninsula. The Kada Port is the gateway to the island of Tomogashima, the main setting of Summertime Rendering.
In real life, many locations that appear on the island in the anime are actually located in Kada, so I visited them after finishing my pilgrimage on Tomogashima.

Map from Nankai otent
The shrine building itself also looks really similar, but red instead of brown. Sadly, I didn’t take a picture like in the anime.
The island on the horizon is Tomogashima.
Bonus: Restaurant Friya (フライヤ)
In the story, police officer Totsumura eats lunch set B at Kofune’s dinner. This lunch set is similar to the lunch set B at the restaurant Friya, a popular and long-established restaurant for western-style food in Wakayama City. Sadly I couldn’t get the same set as I visited in the evening, so I got this delicous Omurice instead.
The inspiration for the building seen in Summertime Render, however, is Ōminato Restaurant (大湊レストラン) in Tokyo. Sadly, it closed down, so I didn’t visit it.
Bonus: Wakaura
Shin-Wakaura Lighthouse as well as Wakaura South Beach appear in the last episode of Summertime Rendering.
I didn’t prepare any pictures, so here are the ones I took freely.
Bonus: Tano and Saikazaki
The paths in Tano and its port, as well as the Saikazaki Fishing Port also appear in Summertime Rendering.
I didn’t prepare any pictures here either, so I only have some pictures of Saikazaki for you
I hope you enjoyed this little trip to the real-life locations of Summertime Rendering. I sure did.
Sightseeing in Wakayama was a lot of fun, both in connection with Summertime Rendering and on its own.
